What does mathematical understanding look like?
Starfire believes that an important hallmark of mathematical understanding is the ability to justify why a particular mathematical statement is true or where a mathematical rule comes from. The student who can explain the rule understands the mathematics, and has a better grasp of new and more complex math. Starfire equips students with both mathematical understanding and procedural skills.
Mathematical Thinking: The process of constructing meaning is the process of learning. With the assistance of Starfire tutors, students learn to think like mathematicians; they find ways to explore situations mathematically. They learn to both specialize and generalize to solve big, open-ended problems. They notice relationships. They explore these relationships and try to figure out why they are happening. They put forth explanations and conjectures and try to convince one another of their thinking. With the support of their tutor, students discover that math is open and creative.
