Let them be bored

"I'm bored" isn't a problem to fix—it's the moment your child's own ideas get room to show up. When every hour is scheduled or screen-filled, kids never practise generating their own direction. Give them unstructured, screen-light time and a box of open-ended stuff — blocks, cardboard, art supplies, odds and ends from the recycling — and let the restlessness settle. Researchers who study children's curiosity find these stretches of "nothing to do" are exactly when kids invent, explore, and learn to entertain their own minds. It's uncomfortable at first, for them and for you. That's normal. The cardboard box becomes a spaceship right after the complaining stops.

Ask, don't answer

When your child asks, "Why is the sky blue?", the fastest thing is to answer. The more useful thing is to ask back: "Huh — what do you think?" Handing the question back teaches them that their first move is to reason, not to look it up. You're not withholding; you're giving them the first crack. Try "How could we find out?" or "What's your best guess, and why?" — then chase it together. Kids who get asked good questions at home grow comfortable sitting in "I don't know yet", which is where all real thinking starts.

Don't rush to rescue

Watching your child struggle with something hard is one of the most uncomfortable parts of parenting — and one of the most important to tolerate. When you jump in and fix it, you accidentally teach, "You couldn't have done that yourself." The research is striking: in one large international comparison, students in higher-performing countries spent far more time genuinely wrestling with hard ideas, while many US students were over-helped — rescued so fast they rarely struggled at all. So when your kid is stuck, wait. Then ask "What have you tried so far?" instead of handing over the answer. And when they get it wrong, treat it as information, not failure: "Interesting — what did that tell you?"

Teach them to question AI, not trust it

Your child is growing up with tools that answer instantly and sound completely sure of themselves — even when they're wrong. The skill that protects them isn't avoiding AI; it's doubting it well. When a chatbot or device answers, ask: "How could we check if that's true?" Let them catch it being confidently wrong — it will be. The goal is a child who treats an AI answer the way a good scientist treats a claim: something to verify, not something to obey. That habit — question first — is what keeps them in the driver's seat as the tools get more powerful.
