What does mathematical understanding look like?

One hallmark of mathematical understanding is the ability to justify, why a particular mathematical statement is true or where a mathematical rule comes from. The student who can explain the rule understands the mathematics, and may have a better chance to succeed at a less familiar task. Mathematical understanding and procedural skill are equally important, and both are accessible using mathematical tasks of sufficient depth and complexity. 

Mathematical Thinking: The process of constructing meaning is the process of learning. Students learn to think like mathematicians; they find ways to explore situations mathematically. They learn to both specialize and generalize to solve big, open-ended problems. They notice relationships. They explore these relationships and try to figure out why they are happening. They put forth explanations and conjectures and try to convince one another of their thinking. They discover that math is open and creative.

Building Number Sense: They learn to solve problems flexibly and creatively. They look at the numbers in a problem and determine the best strategy to solve it. They develop their own strategies. Specifically, they find ways to simplify problems and numbers by pulling them apart (decomposing) and putting them back together (recomposing).
